About Holloway Friendly

We’ve been around for a long time. Since 1875 in fact.

We were founded by a businessman and MP called George Holloway, from Stroud in Gloucestershire.

He saw what happened when his employees got ill or had an accident, and how it impacted their lives. So, he did something about it and came up with an innovative and new type of insurance.

George Holloway MP

The idea was basically that everyone regularly paid a small amount into a pot of money. Then if someone was unlucky and became too unwell to work, they’d get paid some money back out of the pot as a replacement income.

His idea was about creating a community of people looking out for each other, and the money in the pot belonged to the members who paid in. It wasn’t done for profit, and there were no shareholders.

Holloway Friendly today

Fast forward to today, and we’re still insuring people against becoming too unwell to work. In fact, in 2024 we paid out a record £5.13 million to our members who were too unwell to work.

We’re also still owned by our members. The only reason we exist is to help them, not make money for anyone else. Plus, we’re still based in sunny Gloucestershire!

Whilst we’ve been around a long time, we treat every day as an opportunity to keep improving, innovating and make a difference to our members lives.

The way we do that is through our people, and our values. With a company as old as Holloway Friendly, we know that we’re only passing through and we’ll pass on the baton one day to someone else. But while we’re here we’ll do everything we can to make sure we’re there for our members, and to leave the Society strong for the future.

We’ll always look to pay a claim where we can, instead of finding reasons not to. We’ll go the extra mile with our help and support. And if something’s not in the interest of our members, we won’t do it.
